Unlike most billionaires in the nation, Humphrey Kariuki, is an unknown name up until when the case against Africa Spirit Limited came to the limelight. So, who is this guy and what is cooking about him.
Top detectives and KRA (Kenya Revenue Authority) officials raided his Thika based company and found what has left many wondering – An estimated 21 million counterfeit excise stamps and 312,000 litres of illicit products — all worth billions of shillings in taxes.
Africa Spirit Limited is simply one of the many entities that Humphrey Kariuki runs in his empire. All his businesses run under the umbrella Janus Continental Group, which is the holding company. They include: A five-star luxurious Mt Kenya Safari Club, Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and Animal Orphanage, The Hub Mall, Fairmont Mt Kenya Safari Club in Nanyuki, et al

Job and business
He was born 61 years ago, in Nyeri, a family of 10 and studied at Nairobi School and Kagumo High School before joining Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) at age 19.
He said in an interview to Forbes in 2017 that he made ‘some’ money while at CBK and started importing and selling of cars.
He then set up Green Corner Restaurant behind Kencom where he worked as a hands-on manager.
He then set up another restaurant, Twigs Restaurant, next to Green Corner Restaurant, targeting high end clients.
At the same time, his car business was booming, the gaurage always full of the latest models of cars; from BMW to Volvo to Mercedez Benz.
Still in his late 20s, he ventured into wines and spirits distributorship through Wines of the World Limited as the distributor for Jack Daniels, Bacardi and the Edrington Group (The Macallan, The Famous Grouse, and Brugal rum).
In 2002, he started building his own manufacturing company, Africa Spirit Limited, manufactures of Bluemoon Vodka.
He then struck gold by being introduced into a South-Sudan deal in oil and construction. It is after this that he even build Hub shopping mall in Karen and also bought Fairmont Mt Kenya Safari Club in Nanyuki.
Things seem to have turned against him but it is a wait and see.
