Tenant arrested in Kabete over rent arrears

A tenant in Kabete Nairobi County, is in police custody for failing to pay rent and allegedly threatening the caretaker.

The tenant is accused of threatening to kill the caretaker of Mark and Jedy property in Kabete over rent arrears.

A representative of Mark and Jedy property, who spoke to confirmed that the incident happened. He disclosed that the tenant incited other tenants who matched to their offices to threaten them.

Its alleged that a number of tenants refused to pay rent by the end of April.

The matter was reported at Kabete police station and a number of residents were arrested. A notice order has been order by the management for the affected clients to vacate the building by May 31.

“We called in officers from Kabete Police Station and some of them were arrested. In fact, there’s a pending case in court and we are awaiting directions.

“Others we gave them eviction notices, we expect them to leave by May 31. So the letter you have seen is genuine, it’s true what is written,” he stated.

President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to heed to Kenyans plea to compel landlords to waive rent on tenants during the Covid-19 period.

Uhuru said these are personal properties and the state cannot force an individual to reduce rent or waive it altogether.

“These are tough times or all Kenyans. There many landlords who have refused to chase away tenants during this crisis. As humans, let us show mercy and be understanding during this time,” he said.
