Sugarcane farmers reject zoning
Farmers in Nyanza region have rejected government plans to put sugar cane farmers according to their zone.
Speaking before the Sugar Reforms Task-force farmers farmers in unison said that zoning will of no help to them and will kill their morale.
South Nyanza Sugarcane Growers Forum expressed their worries to the Task-force that zoning may submit them to sugar millers who underpay.
“Our fear is that zoning may confine farmers to a sugar miller that does not pay well. This will kill morale of farmers who will eventually stop sugarcane production,” said the farmers.
Also local political leaders present agreed with the farmers that zoning will create monopoly in the industry that will disadvantage the farmer.

The sugar industry has been facing a lot of challenges that led to President Uhuru Kenyatta to Form a task force to look into the matter.
