Senate wants CS Matiang’i head over corruption

The senate wants a thorough investigation into the most powerful Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i and Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua over excess importation of maize in 2017.

An ad hoc report was amended last week to include the names of the above two and CS Mwangi Kiunjuri as well.

“We amended the report to cast the culpability net wider to include all members of the committee that were responsible for the importation. The reason why we are bringing the amendments is that we have revived minutes of what transpired both for the gazette notices and most of the sweeping recommendations that the committee made.” said Senator Margaret Kamar.

At first, the blame had been laid on Finance CS Henry Rotich and the then Agriculture CS Willy Bett.

It should be remembered than in 2017, there was excessive importation of duty free maize thus flooding the market.

This decision was made by inter ministerial committee of which CS Matiang’i is part of.

The argument of the Senate is that all members of the Food Security committee approved the decision to import maize from Mexico and as such, all of them must take responsibility.

President Kenyatta is trying to build his legacy by fight corruption and as it seems, even those in his inner circle are being trapped in the allegations.
