Matiang’i: Relocate Lang’ata prison out of Nairobi
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has proposed that Lang’ata Women’s prison and Kamiti Maximum prison be relocated out of Nairobi.
Speaking during the launch of the National Land Commission’s 2021/2026 strategic plan on Friday, the Super CS noted that it’s not of any benefit for the two correctional facilities to sit on the huge parcel of land within the city.
The CS opines that the land can be used for other commercial activities and expansion of social amenities within the city.
“Why should we have prisons in the middle of the city when we could use that prime land to develop and increase amenities of the city? “ Said the CS.
Kamiti sits in the middle of its own 1,200-acres while Lang’ata sits on about 50 acres. Matiang’i suggested that the two institutions be moved to either Kitale or Bomet.
This comes at a time when the Kisumu County Government has hinted that Kisumu Boys, which sits on 105 acres of land, could be relocated from the central business district (CBD) to the Kibos/Mamboleo area in the outskirts of the Lakeside city.
