KHRC against Huduma Number Registration

Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has swiftly moved to court in an effort to block the single identification platform the National Integrated Identity Management Systems (NIIMS) dubbed Huduma Number.

According to KHRC, there was no public involvement in the entire process yet it is something that will greatly impact on the lives of the Kenyans. NIIMS was sneaked into effect through Miscellanous Amendment Act 2018 that amended the Registration of Persons Act, this is according to KHRC.

The commission looks at this as something that will end up locking out many Kenyans especially the pastrolists or some Kenyans who do not have identification card numbers for some reason.

They farther argue that since Kenya doesn’t have a proper data protection law in place, the sensitive data that will be collected might be subject to misuse and abuse.

KHRC is of the opinion that the process will not protect those it is intended to protect.
