I will NOT pay my HELB loan – MP Babu Owino
Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to write-off loan that former university students own the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
Babu Owino said that on his part, despite being a salaried Kenyan, he will not pay back his HELB loan as it is the government’s mandate as enshrined in the constitution to educate its citizens.
Furthermore, he said that HELB is not from loan acquired from China but rather money collected from the tax payers which is always budgeted for each year hence the government should not be expecting its citizens to pay back.
He later singled out loans owned by Kenya Airways, Sugarcane farmers and Coffee farmers that were written-off by the governemnt, hence he called on the government to also write-off this HELB loan.

The MP was reacting to a threat from HELB that it will publish the names and photos of those who will not have cleared their loans in the next 30 days.
He also hinted that he had prepared his legal team who are filing an injunction barring HELB from making the said publications.
Some time back, the Ministry had also threatened that it will seek orders that will have defaulters arrested and charged.
