High end hospitals under investigations for detaining patients

High end hospitals in the city are under investigations for detaining patients after failing to settle hospital bill.

After an expose by Citizen TV the Ministry of Health has formed a team to probe nine hospitals overs cases of patients being detained for failing to pay their bills.

Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache who set up the committee to investigate the circumstances under which patients and dead bodies are being detained for failure to clear their bills.

“The team will establish the policies and mechanisms in place to deal with emergency admissions and patients who are unable to meet their bills at the time of discharge,” Mochache said.

The hospitals being probed include Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the Nairobi Hospital, the Aga Khan University Hospital, Mater Hospital, National Spinal Injury Hospital, Mathari National Teaching Referral Hospital, Nairobi Women’s Hospital, and Nairobi West Hospital.
Ms. Mochache is then expected to make recommendations within 10 days after the report is submitted to her.
