Government pays sugarcane farmers in Western region
Government has released the promised 1.9 billion shillings owed to sugarcane farmers in western region.
Speaking in Kisumu, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri said that government has released 1.9 billion shillings to pay farmers. He said that government will pay remaining Ksh 800 million in near future.

Kiunjuri also noted that the government had written off 85.5 billion shillings that the cane farmers owed the government.
Jubilee government is keen to revive the sugar industry that is almost collapsing. Main sugar millers in the region Mumias, Nzoia and Sonny are both struggling financially.

President Kenyatta formed a task force to look into the woes of Sugar industry. The task force is set to submit their report in the next two months.
Farmers on the other hand want the government to abolish zoning of sugarcane farmers to allow them sell their products to anyone without restrictions.
