Egerton University student killed in gold mine caves

Egerton University student was among three people who died in Nango, in Bondo, Siaya County, after a mine caved in on Thursday morning.

The deceased identified as David Ochieng Oduro a student at Egerton Nakuru campus, is said to have visited his relatives in Nango before he met his death.

Bondo Sub County Police Commander Antony Wafula who confirmed the incident said that all mining activities in the area had been stopped until further noticed.

 “Mines in the area will be closed until all the safety measures are adhered to,” he said.

The other two who lost their lives are Nicholas Arwa, a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education candidate at Uyawi Secondary School and Kevin Ochieng’ Juma, also a secondary school student.

The bodies of the deceased were retrieved and taken to Bondo Sub County Referral Hospital mortuary.

The incident has been attributed to a heavy rains that was witnessed in the area.
