Andela, lays off 135 staff
Andela a software engineering talent startup, has laid off at least 135 across four countries due to hard economic times.
Andela CEO Jeremy Johnson, made the announcement on Tuesday during a video conference attended by over 1300 employees.
Mr. Johnson projected a decline in number of new customers due to economic upheavals caused by covid-19 pandemic. However, he noted that Andela’s customer base has done fairly during this period.

‘’While our customer base has held up better than most, the majority have still been impacted by the economic downturn. ‘’
“We’re still going to see churn spike this year as well as a decline in new customers due to the economic uncertainty.” Said Mr Johnson.
He observed that the decision was made due to the anticipated slow economic growth in post corona.
“Now that we know that growth is going to be much slower than anticipated, we need to cut costs to ensure that we make it to the other side.’’ he added.

The layoff which represents 10% of the work force has affected Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda. Kenya and Egypt were not affected by the layoff that will be effected from May 8.
This is the second time the company is sending home its employees in less than a year. In september last year at least 400 Junior developers were fired in what the company said it was restructuring to align with global market demand.
